In this short project I decided to make loud roll caps from my youth, but super size them. This all started when I simply couldn’t find any decent good quality loud roll caps. I don’t know whether it’s because they’re all made in China these days, or probably more likely that health and safety have crimped their style. Either way this is what I came up with…
Loud roll caps
These caps are as loud as you want to make them, if you are using standard ring caps to make them I would advise only using the powder from one or two ring caps maximum to see what you think. At one or two ring caps I achieved around 70 – 80 dB, using more ring caps resulted in over 100-120 dB which could result in hearing damage. Safety first always. I did however test a cap made with a whole ring cap (8 shots) and I can safely say it is the loudest roll cap I have ever heard.
As an alternative to ring caps I also tested them with a homemade Armstrong’s mix, this too is very loud and using too much is very easy to do, making them far too loud. I remember a good roll cap being loud enough to annoy others, but not to leave anyone with ringing ears.
Safety and common sense
Safety is always a consideration with any sort of pyrotechnic, even children’s roll caps. I always protect my eyes and ears, so should anyone else considering this sort of project. I also only ever work with a very very small and limited supply of cap powder or Armstrong’s mix at a time.
The above project is aimed at adults for education and entertainment purposes only, not to replicate. Anyone doing so takes full responsibility for their own actions.
